To be honest, I had a lot of opportunities for that, with access to a decent game console and an iPad Mini. At the same time, however, I still had the presentation that the Banner saga would one day make the bold leap from console PCs. With the game’s second anniversary approaching, it has finally arrived there on actual platforms.
Despite the transition, everything the Banner Legend has to offer on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One looks like the original mirror. In that sense, this latest version is more of a regular port than one of the so-called “improved editions”. That’s hardly an issue, however, given the breadth and quality of content the game has on display, especially when you consider how well the mechanics and controls have been tweaked. Sure, with a gamepad in hand it can feel a little cumbersome at times, but this didn’t detract from what is one of the strongest titles the strategy genre has to offer.
The real selling point is the Banner Saga’s harsh and mysterious setting. It is clearly influenced by Norse mythology and depicts a frozen realm in which humans and giants enjoy a developed but fragile alliance. As you switch between two main character groups, you will pick up the tension between these two factions. Where humans continued to advance north and build settlements, the giants, known as Varl, are an ancient race far better suited to harsh climates – much like the colossal Dregde. These rock-clad creatures roam the snowy mountains and seemingly have no other purpose than to kill humans in their path. From the end, however, the numbers have increased, and it is not long before humans and his newly appointed allies begin to suspect that there is something darker woven on the horizon.
