I did drag the playhead to the end of the last segment, but when I hit the record button, the new track started recording at the beginning of the whole project. I hit the red button with the mouse. I started a completely new project and it seems it work fine, namely starting the new track and the end of the previous one. I must have hit a wrong keyboard command when thrasing around.

Thanks for asking for help here in the Apple Support Communities. I understand your need to get your apps working again. I have a couple of recommendations I would like to offer to assist you today. I recommend attempting to download Logic Pro X, and open Garageband also, in Safe Mode and a Test User. Safe Mode will tell us if the issue is related to a startup item or plug-ins. A Test User will let us know if the issue is isolated to your account, or system wide.
To enter Safe Mode, please check this article: Try safe mode if your Mac doesn't finish starting up. I know the article talks about if the Mac doesn't finish starting up, but it will also work to tell you if this issue is caused by some third party plug-in or caches. Once in Safe Mode, try the download, and try opening Garageband. If the issues do not occur in Safe Mode, check the section in that article titled 'If an issue doesn't happen in safe mode' for the steps to solve this.
If the issues do still occur in Safe Mode, please try in a test user. This article will help you create a test user: How to test an issue in another user account on your Mac.
